LONDON --Sterling Resources has had positive results appraising its Breagh gas field in UK southern North Sea block 42/13.

The well encountered the targeted Carboniferous section at a measured depth of 7,321 ft (2,231 m), within 5 ft (1.5 m) of prognosis. Drilling of the upper reservoir section provided good indications of sand and gas shows, later confirmed by open-hole logs.

Log analysis suggests a gross gas column of over 400 ft (122 m) with a gas-water contact potentially in line with that of the original 42/13-2 discovery well. The drilled section of the Carboniferous contained an estimated 76 ft (23 m) of sand within the gas column, with porosities in these stretches of sand estimated at 10-20%.

Following completion of the logging program, the main aim being to compile seismic velocity and reservoir pressure data, Sterling plans to set a 7-in (17 ¾-cm). liner. It then aims to initiate a flow test, allowing it to determine Breagh's commerciality.
