GUILDFORD, UK --An appraisal well is under way on the Don South West field in the UK northern North Sea.

According to partner Valiant Petroleum, the semisubmersibleStena Spey will drill the well to a depth of 100-ft (30.5 m) below the Top Cormorant formation at a target depth of around 11,850 ft (3,612 m). Drilling and testing should last around 45 days.

The target location is around 1.5 km (0.93 mi) northwest of the 211/18a-22 discovery that tested a full Brent oil column, before reaching total depth in the Dunlin formation. Should the well encounter commercial quantities of hydrocarbons, it will be suspended for future use as a producer in any development.

Another objective is to determine whether Don South West extends into a neighboring block part-owned by Valiant.
