STAVANGER, Norway --Statoil has concluded a positive appraisal well of its Ragnarrock field in the Norwegian North Sea, discovered this September.

Well 16/2-4, drilled by theWest Epsilon in 113 m of water, found light oil in low permeability limestone. There was no production test, but small-scale formation tests revealed promising flow characteristics.

Ragnarrock is 35-km (21.75 mi) east of the undeveloped Gudrun field, and 30-km (18.64 mi) south of the producing Grane field. StatoilHydro estimates recoverable oil at 30-60MMbbl.

The latest well is the third drilled in production license PL 265, awarded under Norway's 2001 licensing round. It is also the sixth productive exploratory well drilled this year by theWest Epsilon in the North Sea. The rig will move to a shipyard before resuming work for StatoilHydro on the Huldra field.
