CAIRO, Egypt -- BP Egypt has hit gas with the Giza North-1 well in the North Alexandria concession in the Mediterranean Sea.

BP estimates reserves for the Giza complex at more than 1 tcf of gas. Another well is to be drilled in April 2007 to further appraise the complex.

The Giza North-1 well is being suspended as a potential producing well before the rig moves on to the next appraisal well in the Taurus field as part of a planned four-well appraisal program.

"This successful result further demonstrates BP's commitment to continued investment in exploration, appraisal, and development activities in the Nile Delta and its cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum to provide new gas discoveries and incremental supply to meet future growth of the gas business in Egypt," says Hesham Mekawi, president and general manager of BP Egypt.

BP operates the North Alexandria concession with 60% interest. RWE Dea holds the remaining 40%.
