Talisman to step up search around Varg

OSLO -- Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway has approved Talisman Energy’s latest drilling program in the southern Norwegian North Sea.

Later this month, the company will spud exploration well 15/12-23 in production license 038D, using the semisubmersible Transocean Winner. The location is in 100 m (328 ft) of water in the Varg area, about 230 km (143 mi) west of the coast of Rogaland. Drilling should take around 125 days.

The PSA has also cleared Marathon Petroleum to use the semisub Songa Dee for a second phase of production drilling on the Alvheim field in the northern North Sea. The consent relates to wells 24/6-B-4, 25/4-L-1 and 25/4-L-2 in PL 203.

Drilling operations should start in May 2010, with an estimated duration for the three wells of 300 days, including completion.
