WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- AWE has decided to plug and abandon the Kahu-1 exploration well offshore New Zealand as a dry hole.

Partner New Zealand Oil & Gas says the well located the targeted Kahu valley feature, but did not encounter reservoir-quality sandstone.

The well was drilled in license PMP 38158, around 3 km (1.8 mi) east of the producing Tui oil field.

Once operations have been completed, the Kan Tan IV drilling rig will be released to the partnership drilling the nearby Tuatara-1 exploration well.
