SAN RAMON, California – Chevron Corp. reports that its Sappho-1 exploration well off Western Australia is a natural gas discovery. The well, in WA-391-P 87 mi (140 km) offshore northwest of Onslow, was drilled to 15,406 ft (4,696 m) and encountered 246 ft (75 m) of net gas pay.

“This is the latest in a succession of back-to-back discoveries that underscore our exploration capabilities,” says Jim Blackwell, president, Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production Co. “These discoveries will underpin the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects.”

Chevron is the operator with 50%. Shell Development (Australia) and ExxonMobil each hold 25%.
