STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Lundin Petroleum has spudded an exploration well on its Avaldsnes prospect in the Norwegian North Sea, using the semisubmersible drilling rig Transocean Winner.

The location is in block 16/2, around 25 km (15.5 mi) east of the Luno discovery, on the opposite side of the Utsira structural high.

Lundin is targeting a Lower Cretaceous/Jurassic age sandstone sequence, analogous to the Luno reservoir, within a stratigraphic/four-way dip closure. The company estimates gross unrisked prospective resources in the primary Avaldsnes target at around 130 MMboe.

Well 16/2-6 should take 38 days to drill, excluding testing. Lundin is operator, in partnership with Statoil Petroleum and Maersk Oil Norway.
