WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- AWE reports hydrocarbon shows in target sands reached while drilling the Tui South West prospect off New Zealand.

The Tui SW-2 well, which is still in progress, is being drilled in mining license PMP 38158 in the offshore Taranaki basin, 85 km (53 mi) from New Plymouth. It has reached a measured TD of 3,749 m (12,300 ft).

According to partner New Zealand Oil & Gas, oil shows were encountered as expected over a 10-m (33-ft) section in the top of the objective Kapuni F sands, which have proven to be productive at the adjacent Tui oilfield.

Wireline logs will be run over the next few days to determine the significance of these shows.
