RIO DE JANEIRO -- OGX Petróleo e Gás Participações has encountered an oil-bearing interval in the Albian section of well 1-OGX-6-RJS, drilled by the Diamond Offshore rig Ocean Quest in Campos Basin shallow water block BM-C-41 block. OGX holds a 100% working interest in this block.

The well, spud on Feb. 2, has so far identified an oil column of around 70 m (229 ft), with 38 m (124 ft) of net pay recorded in carbonate reservoirs in the Albian section. Thermobaric effects associated with volcanism in the area helped optimize the permo-porosity properties of the reservoirs. Well OGX-6 will be drilled to a final depth of around 3,600 m (11,811 ft).

OGX adds that over 50 m (164 ft) of reservoir rock cores have been collected from the well to analyze reservoir characteristics and to assist with appraisal and development of future projects. These samples, and logs, indicate a strong correlation between the Albian reservoirs of OGX-6 (Etna), OGX-3 (Waimea), and OGX-2 (Pipeline). The Etna prospect is 8.5 km (5.3 mi) northeast of the Waimea prospect and appears to be structurally 400 m (1,312 ft) above the Waimea reservoir.

"Our review of this data indicates that these accumulations may be connected and that the recently discovered oil province may, in fact, extend to the north of the BM-C-41 block, confirming its very significant petrolific potential,” says Paulo Mendonça, OGX's general executive officer. “New data will be collected and new wells will be drilled in order for us to better map the prospects identified in this province,” he add.
