OSLO -- Wildcat well 15/12-21 in the North Sea has proven oil, according to Talisman Energy Norge. The well encountered a 133-m (436-ft) oil column in Middle Jurassic and Upper Triassic reservoir rocks. The size of the discovery has not yet been clarified because the oil/water contact was not proven, the company reports. An appraisal well will be drilled to determine the size of the oil discovery. If profitable resources are proven, the discovery could be tied in to the nearby Varg field.

Extensive data collection and sampling have been carried out, as well as a successful formation test. The average production rate was 197 cm/d of oil through a 20/64-in. nozzle opening, the company says.

The jackupMaersk Guardian drilled the well to a vertical depth of 3,268 m (10,722 ft) below the sea surface. The well was concluded in the Skagerrak formation in the Upper Triassic.
