EDINBURGH, UK -- Melrose Resources should spud an appraisal well later this month on its Kaliakra gas discovery offshore Bulgaria.

The jackup Prometeu will drill the well in the block Galata exploration concession in the Black Sea, around 15 km (9.3 mi) east of the Galata field production platform.

Melrose is hoping the latest well will prove significant reserves, boosting its current P50 estimate for Kaliakra of 47 bcf. The results should also assist development planning.

In the same area, the company is awaiting approval from Bulgaria’s government to develop the 24 bcf Kavarna gas field, 7 km (4.3 mi) east of the Galata platform.

It is also aiming to finalize the various agreements that must be completed prior to starting gas injection in the Galata field gas storage facility. These have been delayed by the build-up to the Bulgarian government elections, held last Sunday.
