MELBOURNE, Australia – The jackup Ensco 107has drilled the Manaia-1 appraisal well to 6,394 m (20,978 ft) intersecting target Mangahewa sandstones. Based on mud logging and logging while drilling (LWD) data it is interpreted to contain hydrocarbons, according to Cue Energy. The drillpipe is being back reamed out of the hole in preparation for setting 9 5/8-in. (24-cm) casing. A 1,000-m (3,281-ft) horizontal section will then be drilled through the reservoir.

The 45-day drilling program is expected to confirm the presence of the oil column established by the Maui-4 exploration well. The Manaia-1 is being drilled as an extended reach well from the Maari WHP using the Ensco 107. If hydrocarbons are established, the well will be completed and tied into the Maari facilities for testing and production.
