STAVANGER, Norway -- Wildcat well 25/8-17 in the North Sea is uncommercial, according to operator ExxonMobil. The well encountered a small oil column in the Upper Paleocene (the Heimdal formation), which was delineated by appraisal well 25/8-17 A. The reservoir rock was thinner than expected and proved limited volumes of oil, the company reports.

Well 25/8-17 was drilled to a vertical depth of 2,208 m (7,244 ft) below the sea surface and was terminated in the Ty formation in the Lower Paleocene. Well 25/8-17 A was drilled to a vertical depth of 2,154 m (7,067 ft) and was terminated in the Heimdal formation in the Upper Paleocene. The company conducted data acquisition and sampling, but no formation testing.

Development is not an option under current price assumptions, ExxonMobil says. The wells will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
