ADELAIDE, Australia -- The Burnside-1ST1 exploration well in the Browse basin offshore Australia has hit pay, says operator Santos. The well encountered a 65-m (213-ft) gross gas column in the Brewster Sandstone.

Wireline logging indicates gas throughout the relatively low-permeability sandstone interval, the company says. Pressure data supports the potential for the gas column to extend below the base of the sand. The penetrated reservoir is within the same geologic formation as the nearby gas-bearing fields Ichthys, Mimia, and Prelude.

“It’s pleasing to make a discovery in a basin with so many developments under consideration,” says Trevor Brown, Santos’ VP of exploration. “Further work will now be done on recovered samples to understand the reservoir characteristics and an appraisal plan will be developed to define the size of the resource.”
