CALGARY, Canada -- Nexen has made a discovery at Hobby on block 20/1N in the UK North Sea, approximately 1.5 km (0.9 mi) west of the company's Golden Eagle discovery.

The well encountered a significant oil column which was drill-stem tested and flowed at an average restricted rate of 5,500 b/d of oil through a 56/64-in. choke, the company reports. Early analysis indicates high quality crude oil in good quality reservoir sands.

Nexen plans to drill multiple sidetracks to determine the extent of the discovery. The company has identified additional drilling opportunities in the area, and plans further offset exploratory and appraisal drilling this year.

Hobby is part of the Golden Eagle area, which includes discoveries at Golden Eagle and Pink.
