ABERDEEN, UK – The jackup ENSCO 80has spudded the Platypus gas field appraisal well in the UK southern North Sea for operator Dana Petroleum.
Platypus is inblocks 48/1a and 48/1c, 18 km (11.2 mi) north-northwest of the West Sole gas field and 15 km (9.3 mi) west-southwest of the Babbage field.
Dana discovered Platypus’ Rotliegendes gas accumulation in 2010 via the 48/1a-5 well, which encountered 218 vertical ft (66 m) of gas-bearing sands. According to partnerParkmead Group, the structure could contain in-place gas of up to 180 bcf.
This latest well will be drilled horizontally through the Rotliegendes gas reservoir to confirm deliverability, and will probably be suspended for re-use as a gas producer.
Other joint venture partners are First Oil Expro and CalEnergy Gas.
