Sabah well boosts prospect of gas cluster project offshore Malaysia

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Petroleum (NASDAQ:LUPE) has notched its third gas discovery in the past two years at the SB303 block offshore Sabah, Malaysia.

TheWest Courageous rig drilled Berangan-1 as a vertical well to a depth of 1,709 m (5,607 ft) in 70 m (229 ft) water depth. The well penetrated a gross gas column of more than 165 m (541 ft) in Miocene sands, 10 km (6.2 mi) southeast of last year’s Tarap gas find and 15 km (9.3 mi) south of the Cempulut gas discovery.

Data acquisition included fluid samples and a pressure profile indicating a single continuous gas column, also defining the probable gas/water contact.

According to Ashley Heppenstall, president and CEO of Lundin Petroleum, the four fields (the other is Titik Terang) are within a 10-km radius and could form the basis for a gas cluster development.

Lundin Malaysia has a 75% interest in SB303, the remainder held by Petronas Carigali.

West Courageous now heads to offshore Peninsula Malaysia for a three-well exploration campaign for Lundin, starting with Merawan Batu-1 well in the PM308B block.
