STAVANGER -- StatoilHydro has made an oil discovery in deepwater block 15/06 offshore Angola.

The discovery well, Sangos-1, drilled in 1,349 m (4,426 ft) of water to 3,343 m (10,968 ft) TVD, encountered an oil column of 127 m (417 ft) in high permeability Miocene sands.

According to the company, the field resources and preliminary results exceed pre-drilling expectations and form the basis for the beginning of specialist geologic and engineering studies, which will be used in connection with finalization of the development plan.

The Sangos discovery is the first exploration well to be drilled in block 15/06, according to StatoilHydro. The well will soon be followed by other exploration wells in nearby structures with significant potential with the aim of achieving synergic development of the western area of the block, the company says.
