MADRID, Spain -- Drilling has begun on the Panoramix well in block BM-S-48 in the Santos basin, according to Repsol.
Repsol plans to continue drilling on to the Vampira well, 180 km (112 mi) from the coast in 140 m (459 ft) of water. The work in the Santos basin will last for two years in blocks BM-S-48 y BM-S-55, where two or three wells will be drilled, the company says.
The company will use Transocean's Sovereign Explorer (Sovex) rig for the drilling program. The semisubmersible is equipped with technology to work in shallow water. It can work in water up to 1,280 m (4,199 ft) deep and drill down to a depth of 8,902 m (29,206 ft).
