OSLO, Norway -- The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has approved applications to drill two exploration wells in the Norwegian and North seas.
Nexen Exploration Norge is cleared to drill well 6507/8-8 in Norwegian Sea license PL 434, using the semisubmersible Songa Delta. The rig must first complete another wildcat for Wintershall Norge in PL 378.
This will be the first well on PL 434, awarded in February 2007 under the APA 2006 licensing round. It will be drilled around 7 km (4.3 mi) northwest of the Statoil-operated Heidrun field.
NPD has also authorized Marathon Petroleum Norge to drill wildcat 25/10-11 in PL 505 in the central Norwegian North Sea.
The designated rig Transocean Winner must first complete another well and side track for Marathon in PL 340 BS.
This will be the first well on PL 505, awarded two years ago, which covers parts of blocks 25/7 and 25/10. The drilling location is around 10 km (6.2 mi) west of Esso’s Balder field.
