Tool simplifies deviated well interventions

ABERDEEN, UK – Wireline Engineering (WE) has introduced the Advanced Kickover tool, which is claimed to cut intervention costs.

BP is the first user of the patented downhole technology, which enhances the efficiency of gas lift mandrel interventions by improving wireline conveyance and tool orientation.

WE says this is especially important in high deviation wells where the gas lift mandrel is set at challenging depths and angles.

The tool’s ability to run smoothly through a deviated well lessens the chances of access failure, and it is said to be more effective at deploying or retrieving gas lift valves at the first attempt, thereby minimizing downtime.

Cost savings arise from the reduced risk off mis-runs and operating overruns.

The Advanced Kickover tool is an evolution of the proven Enhanced Performance Kickover tool – R&D to take it from a concept through to field release took around one year.

Its first application on a BP project involved delivering gas-lift mandrel intervention and conveyance operations a deviated well in the Magnus field in the East Shetland Basin in the UK North Sea.
