LONDON – Salamander Energy has P&A’d its latest well off northern Vietnam as a sub-commercial discovery.
The Cat Ba–1X (101-CB-1X) well was drilled in block 101-100/04 to a TD of 1,724 m (5,656 ft). It encountered 38 m (124 ft) of net hydrocarbon pay in Tertiary clastics, its secondary objective.
The pay section comprised gas-bearing sandstones underlain by an oil-bearing reservoir. According to Salamander, the Tertiary reservoirs are of good quality, but pressure data and seismic mapping suggests in-place volumes are below the commercial threshold.
Only low levels of gas were recorded while drilling the primary objective, the Palaeozoic “buried hills” play.
