HONG KONG -- BG Group has discovered gas in deep water in the South China Sea, according to partner CNOOC. The Lingshui 22-1-1 well on block 64/11, drilled in the Qiongdongnan basin, encountered gas-bearing sands.

The location is around 130 km (81 mi) offshore in a water depth of 1,338 m (4,390 ft). BG plans further analysis of the well results to evaluate hydrocarbon potential in the block.

Zhu Weilin, CNOOC’s executive VP, said: “This is the first deepwater well in the Qiongdongnan basin. We are excited about the well results. It has further strengthened our confidence in deepwater exploration in this area.”

The two companies signed the production sharing contract for the block in June 2006.
