ABERDEEN, UK -- BP has contracted KCA Deutag to manage all its operated platform-drilling facilities in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea.

The six-rig, five-year contract, with options for a further five years, covers platform drilling operations and maintenance services on the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli and Shah Deniz fields. KCA Deutag claims this is the world’s largest single platform drilling contract.

The installations are the Central, East and West Azeri, Chirag, Deepwater Gunashli, and Shah Deniz platforms. Around 700 KCA Deutag personnel on and offshore support these facilities, of which over 500 are Azeri nationals. KCA Deutag owns the rig on the Chirag platform, which it leases to BP.

In 1997 the company started working in Azerbaijan, converting its land rig T-105 for the Chirag platform, followed by operations and maintenance contracts on the platform.

Currently the company is involved in detail design of the next platform rig for the Chirag Oil Project. The platform is due to be installed in 2013, and KCA Deutag will also operate that rig.
