STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Drilling is under way on the Caterpillar prospect in the Norwegian North Sea, operated by Marathon Petroleum.

Well 24/9-10S, drilled by the semisubmersible Transocean Winner, will target Hermod formation sandstones in the same reservoir trend as the Marihøne discovery which is 6 km (3.7 mi) to the west and 27 km (16.8 mi) south of Marathon’s Alvheim production complex. Drilling should take around 50 days, with a planned TD for the well of 2,165 m (7,103 ft) below sea level.

Partner Lundin Petroleum estimates Caterpillar’s unrisked prospective oil resources of 11 MMbbl. A discovery could be developed as a satellite to Marihøne.

Caterpillar is in license PL340BS. ConocoPhillips is the other partner.
