HOUSTON, Sept. 13 -- The Faroe Islands Petroleum Ministry said Thursday it has approved Amerada Hess (Faroes) Ltd.'s plans to drill a wildcat in 950 m of water on the Faroe Shelf.

Amerada Hess has contracted the drilling rig Sovereign Explorer, which was in the process of plugging a Faroes well drilled for Statoil (OGJ Online, July 12, 2001).

Amerada Hess is the operator for a group that includes British Gas Ltd., Danish Oil and Natural Gas Corp., and Atlantic Petroleum.

The Faroes Partnership holds license 001, covering acreage southeast of the islands on the boundary with the United Kingdom.

The well is expected to take 2-3 months and will be the last well drilled on the Faroe Shelf this year. The drillship West Navion is still working for BP PLC on license 004.
