ASTANA, Kazakhstan– JSC NC KazMunayGas (KMG) and Korean Consortium KC Kazakh (KCK) have found oil and gas in the Zhambyl area of the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea.

A first exploration well (ZB-1) was drilled on theZhambyl structure between May and August to a depth of 2,200 m (7,218 ft).

Zhambyl Petroleum organized the drilling operations with KMG subsidiary Teniz Burgylau using the newCaspian Explorer rig, built by Ersai Caspian Contractors in the port of Kuryk in the Mangistau region.

The well encountered two oil and gas-prospective intervals in the mid-Jurassic formation. During a subsequent drillstem test, the flow was 24 cm/d (848 cf/d) on a 16/64-in., choke and 110 cm/d (3,885 cf/d) on a 32/64-in. choke.

KMG and KCK plan further exploration in the area, including 3D seismic studies on the Zhambyl field and drilling of an exploration well (ZT-1) on the Zhetysu structure.
