LONDON Perenco Rio del Rey has started a five-well development drilling program at the Kita Eden Field offshore Cameroon, using a purpose-built shallow-water barge.

This was needed due to the ultra-shallow waters (4 m deep) and strong currents, which are among the chief reasons why there has been no drilling on the field in the northern Rio del Rey Basin since 1984.

Perenco and its services subsidiary Dixstone designed and constructed the barge to work alongside Dixstone’s LUG platform, which over the past five years has produced more than 16 MMbbl of oil from fields offshore Cameroon.

Last year Perenco signed a 20-year license agreement with the Cameroon state and partner company Addax Petroleum Cameroon.

Armel Simondin, CEO designate of Perenco Group, said, “Once again, we are demonstrating our firm commitment and ability to unlock stranded reserves in very mature fields. As a result of this campaign, Cameroon can look forward to the Kita Eden Field still producing for decades to come.”
