TORONTO  Drilling has started on the Wei-1 exploration well in the Corentyne Block offshore Guyana.

CGX Energy operates in partnership with Frontera Energy Corp. The well location is in 1,912 ft (583 m) of water, 200 km offshore Georgetown, Guyana.

In addition, the government has approved the partners’ appraisal plan for the northern section of the block (which starts with the current well). Following completion of operations on Wei-1 and analysis of the results, further drilling could follow at some point to assess a potential development both in area of the Kawa-1 light oil/condensate discovery and throughout the northern section of the block.

Wei-1, 14 km northwest of Kawa-1, will be drilled to a planned total depth (TD) of 20,500 ft (6,248 m), targeting Maastrichtian, Campanian and Santonian stacked sands within channel and fan complexes. It could take up to five months to reach TD.

CGX Energy also issued an update on its plans for the Berbice Deep Water Port (BDWP) project, on which it has so far spent more than $22 million via its subsidiary Grand Canal Industrial Estates.

The facility would serve as an offshore supply base for the oil and gas industry and as a multipurpose terminal catering to agricultural import/export, containerized and specialized cargo including aggregates for construction.

It would enable provisions to operators and vendors in the territorial waters of Guyana and neighboring Suriname.

Production has started of concrete piles and concrete pre-stressed structures for the in-river construction of a 50-m by 12-m access trestle being built from the quayside yard westward into the Berbice river.

Later in the quarter, river construction activities will get underway, including dredging.
