ATHENS, Greece – Drilling has started on the Athena exploration well in Block 12 offshore Israel.

Operator Energean is targeting prospective resources 140 MMboe for a potential tieback to the Karish FPSO.

Last year the company contracted the drillship Stena IceMAX for a multi-well campaign in the area. After Athena, the planned sequence is Karish Main 4 (appraisal); Karish North (re-entry, development); Hermes in Block 31 and Hercules in Block 23 (exploration, both optional).

Energean will decide in Q2 whether to drill the two optional wells,

As for the current Karish field development, the FPSO entered dry-dock last week for cleaning and preparation for sail-away from Singapore to Israel, and installation at the field location, 90 km offshore.

Later this year Energean expects the jackup Wl Qajer01 to start development drilling for its shallow-water North East Almeyra (NEA)/North Idku (NI) project offshore Egypt.

Four subsea wells will be tied back to the Abu Qir platform. In addition, the company expects to drill an infill well in Q2 to support production in the Abu Qir concession, and a further three wells following completion of the NEA/NI program.
