TORONTO – ExxonMobil’s well on the ultra-deepwater Sapote prospect offshore Guyana encountered indications of hydrocarbons, according to Eco (Atlantic) Oil & Gas.

Eco recently acquired a 6.4% interest in Canadian company JHI Associates, which is a partner in the Canje block.

The drillship Stena DrillMAX drilled Sapote-1 in 2,549 m (8,362 ft) of water and to a depth of 6,759 m (22,172 ft). The well recorded hydrocarbon shows in a deeper interval than anticipated, with no shows in the main upper objective horizon.

Sidewall coring and wireline logging has finished. ExxonMobil now plans to define the reservoir properties, including porosity and permeability, and to analyze the cored samples for hydrocarbons.

In the adjoining offshore Orinduik block to the west, the partners, led by Tullow Oil, are maturing their next set of drilling targets, with a focus on the proven Cretaceous section.

According to Eco, the block’s eastern section is close to the established Liza oil trend in the Stabroek block, where ExxonMobil will next drill the Fangtooth-1 well just north and down dip of Orinduik.
