STAVANGER, Norway – Equinor has contracted COSL Offshore Management to drill four wells on the Statfjord Øst field in the Norwegian North Sea, starting in spring 2023.

The semisubmersible COSLPromoter, which worked for eight years on the Troll field between April 2013 and April 2021, will manage the program, with options for the rig to drill five further wells afterwards on Statfjord satellites.

Estimated value of the 220-day firm contract is close to $56 million. This includes drilling and completion services, fuel, wastewater treatment, cuttings handling, and an upgrade of through installation of an automatic drilling control system.

Additional services include running of casing, ROV, mob/demobilization. These are worth a further $4 million.

After completing the initial planned work program, the two parties plan to extend the co-operation by continuing options. Presently the rig is in hot lay-up at the CCB base near Bergen.

Equinor said the contract underlines the value of smaller rigs on the Norwegian continental shelf that are suited to required drilling operations.

By mooring the COSLPromoter at Statfjord Øst, carbon emission levels should be contained, with COSL assuming responsibility for the fuel consumption. The company is working on other technologies and measures to further reduce emissions from drilling, said Equinor’s chief procurement officer Mette Ottøy.
