LONDON – CIMC’s semisubmersible Deepsea Yantai, operated by Odfjell Drilling, has spudded an appraisal well for Neptune Energy on the Dugong discovery in the Norwegian North Sea.

Neptune discovered the field last year in production license 882, 158 km (98 mi) west of Florø, in a water depth of 330 m (1,082 ft).

It estimates recoverable resources in the range 40-120 MMboe.

Steinar Meland, the company’s director of Subsurface in Norway, said: “The main objective of the appraisal well is to collect the data necessary to help provide certainty related to the reservoir, structure and recoverable resources, so the partnership can optimize the development solution.

“Data from this well will also provide valuable information to help de-risk additional exploration and development opportunities in the license and in the surrounding area.”

Neptune and partners Petrolia NOCO, Idemitsu Petroleum Norge, and Concedo plan to drill an exploration well on the Dugong Tail prospect this summer.

Dugong is close to the production facilities serving the Snorre field. The reservoir is at a subsurface depth of 3,250-3,400 m (10,663-11,155 ft).
