CNOOC proves oil and gas in complex South China Sea play

HONG KONGCNOOC has made a potentially play-opening discovery in the eastern South China Sea.

Huizhou 26-6 appears to be the first mid-to-large sized condensate oil and gas field in the shallow water area of the Pearl River Mouth basin, the company said.

It is the also the first time that the company has achieved a commercial and productive oil and gas flow in exploration of the complex buried hill reservoir in this part of the sea.

Huizhou 26-6 structure is in the Huizhou Sag in the Zhu1 Depression, in an average water depth of around 113 m (371 ft).

Discovery well HZ26-6-1, completed at a depth of 4,276 m (14,029 ft), intersected oil and gas pay zones with a total thickness of around 422.2 m (1,385 ft).

On test, the well produced 2,020 b/d of oil and 15.36 MMcf/d of gas.
