STAVANGER, Norway – Equinor and Neptune Energy have proven more oil close to the Gudrun field in the central Norwegian North Sea.

The semisubmersible West Phoenix drilled two wells on the Sigrun East prospect in production license PL025/187, 11 km (6.8 mi) southeast of Gudrun. Water depth was 109 m (357 ft).

According to Equinor, the main well encountered oil in three zones in moderate-quality sandstone in the Hugin formation. Estimated recoverable resources are 7-17 MMboe.

Both wells were follow-ups to the 2018 Sigrun appraisal well (15/3-11). The aims were to prove up extra resources and clarify the commerciality of the area.

Equinor said it would consider a development via the Gudrun facilities.

The West Phoenix will now transfer to PL889 in the Norwegian Sea to drill a new exploration well, operated by Neptune.

Although Equinor Energy and Neptune Energy Norge shared the cost of the two wells, OMV and Repsol are also partners in the licenses.

Neptune added that it would have two drilling rigs on contract as operator of six exploration wells offshore Norway over the next two years.
