HOUSTON – BP plans to add storage capacity and system redundancies to its Gulf of Mexico oil spill response. In a letter replying to Coast Guard Read Admiral James A. Watson, BP says its plan to build capacity and redundancy have been under way since May 13.

BP also says it plans the following additional steps:
1. A 25,000 b/d oil capacity FPSO will be mobilized from South America as a backup to the Toisa Pisces and Helix Producer. That vessel will require four weeks to arrive.
2. Two more lightering tankers are on the way from Europe.
3. An added 3,800 ft of 6-in flexible hose is on its way from Brazil to backup subsea hoses.
4. Works continues to retrieve and repair the blue pod from the Deepwater Horizon BOP and to create added redundancy.
5. Work is under way to enable the Enterprise or Clear Leader to connect to either of the permanent riser systems.
6. Additional heat capacity is being organized for the Clear Leader test equipment to expand its installed capacity.

Looking ahead, BP says its schedule calls for the Enterprise/LMRP cap, and Q4000/Subsea mud manifold to be operational. By the end of June, BP says the installed capacity will be 40,000 to 53,000 b/d of oil with the permanent riser No. 1 production system in place.

Looking further out, BP plans to have a new LMRP cap with more seal integrity to ensure a relief well kill operations, add redundancy, prepare for hurricane season, and expand the recovery capacity to 60,000 to 80,000 b/d of oil
