WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reports from Washington indicate the Obama administration plans to move to release new safety requirements for shallow-water Gulf of Mexico drilling. This would accompany an amendment to the drilling moratorium recently decreed for the Gulf.

Anticipated elements of the new rules reportedly include independent certification of BOP operation and well design.

This change of rules comes after President Obama visited the Gulf Coast and was urged by local officials to remove the drilling ban to preserve jobs associated with the industry.
