HOUSTON – BP says it continues to prepare for a more permanent containment system using floating risers at the Deepwater Horizon oil spill site in the Gulf of Mexico.
The first planned addition to the lower marine riser package (LMRP), currently capturing a volume of oil and gas from the well, will take oil and gas from the choke line of the failed BOP via a separate riser to the Q4000 for flaring through a clean burning system. This operation is expected to get under way “in the next few days” says BP.
Meanwhile, the more permanent system of floating risers also is in progress. A manifold is on the seabed and a suction pile to anchor a riser is in place. BP says this system may begin operations by the end of this month, or early July.
Both relief wells continue drilling. The first one started is at 13,978 ft (4,260 m) and the second is at 9,022 ft (2,750 m).
Up to June 14, spill cost to BP is $1.6 billion, according to the company.
