JDZ deepwater well under way

Drilling has started on Chevron-operated Block 1 in the Nigeria/Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Zone

(JDZ) Pan-African independent Afren says drilling is under way on the first exploration well on Block 1 of the Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Zone. On behalf of operator Chevron, theDeepwater Discovery drillship is drilling the Obo-1 well in 1,750 m of water. Operations should be completed by mid-March.

The block is situated 190 miles north of the city of Sao Tome and 125 miles south of Port Harcourt. According to Afren's chief executive, the well will be testing "a sizeable prospect". Other partners in the license are ExxonMobil and Dangote Energy Equity Resources.
