HOUSTON – bp has appointed Starlee Sykes CEO of Archaea Energy. Sykes previously served as the senior vice president (SVP) of bp’s Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and Canada business.

bp acquired Archaea in December 2022. The acquisition expands bp’s presence in the US bioenergy industry, enhancing its ability to support customers’ decarbonization goals. Archaea is a US renewable natural gas (RNG) producer and operates 50 RNG and landfill gas-to-energy facilities across the US, with a development pipeline creating an expected five-fold increase in RNG volumes by 2030.

Starlee has more than 25 years of leadership experience in the energy sector. Prior to her role in bp’s GoM and Canada business, she served as vice president for global offshore projects and vice president for global deepwater projects. She is a member of the bp America Board of Directors and board of directors for the Greater Houston Partnership.

Moreover, Andy Krieger will succeed Sykes as SVP GoM and Canada. Krieger was previously SVP bp wells, where he’s been accountable for all drilling, completion and intervention activities spanning the globe, across bp’s eight operating regions. Prior to assuming this role, he was the vice president of wells for the GoM region and vice president of technical functions, responsible for providing integrated support to the wells teams across the globe.

The appointment of Sykes is effective immediately, and Krieger will assume duties on May 1.

bp is planning to increase its GoM production to about 400,000 boe/d by the middle of this decade. bp started up its fifth operated platform, Argos, this month.

On a LinkedIn post, Sykes shared, "I like to view change as a new adventure, so I’m really excited about what’s next as I move into my new role as CEO of Archaea Energy. I believe bioenergy is a vital part of the energy mix which will help the world get to net zero, and our acquisition of Archaea late last year has positioned us to be a leader in the bioenergy business. I will be focused on working with the team to expand and accelerate the growth of this business, which currently operates 50 renewable natural gas and landfill gas-to-electric facilities across the US. While I am looking forward to that challenge, I am very much going to miss the incredible people in our Gulf of Mexico and Canada business."
