HOUSTON--Dan-Loc Bolt & Gasket introduces a new category of stud bolts for corrosion-resistant applications. The TuffCor bolt was engineered to provide lower maintenance and extended life in severe environmental conditions, such as offshore and coastal onshore locations.
The new bolt category was developed using salt fog tests conducted by independent laboratories. In these tests, TuffCor says its bolts endured 5,000 hours without corroding while standard bolts corroded after 1,000 hours. Although test times cannot be converted directly to field life, the tests indicated an advance in corrosion resistance.
Because it resists corrosion better than conventional coated bolts, the TuffCor bolt eliminates rust bleed, and reduces breakout torque. It is also safer, since torch cutting isn't necessary.
"Bolt corrosion creates maintenance problems on rigs," said Jim Lange, vice president of Sales and Marketing. "The constant fight against corrosion means that standard bolts have to be maintained more often. It takes extra time to get nuts off corroded bolts, and in many cases, they have to be cut off – but using a cutting torch is dangerous. It's an important development."
