OSLO, Norway --Petroleum Safety Authority Norway has started an investigation following an incident involving a dropped object on the Njord A semisubmersible platform, a week before Christmas.

During a lifting operation on the facility, an elevator with slip joint came loose and fell to the drill floor. The slip joint weighs around 23 metric tons (25.3 tons).

PSA says the incident did not result in personal injury, but there was strong potential for injury and loss of life.

The aim of the investigation will be to assess operational, technical, and management factors in relation to the incident; to assess triggering and underlying causes; and to evaluate any similarities with previous incidents.
