MUNICH, Germany -- Siemens Netherlands and GustoMSC have partnered to offer electrically powered rack and pinion systems for jackup units. The variable-speed-driven rack and pinion systems, jointly developed by the companies, are used to lift drilling vessels and platforms above sea level, making them impervious to waves.
The frequency-controlled electrical drives can position the legs of the drilling vessel or platform on the seabed faster and more accurately than conventional systems, the companies say.
