HOUSTON -- ATP Oil & gas has installed an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system for air traffic control on the ATP Innovator platform. This is a first in the GoM, according to the company.
ATP partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Surveillance and Broadcast Services Office, Helicopter Association International (HAI), Gulf helicopter operators, and other offshore oil and gas companies to implement the new technology.
ADS-B uses location data from the global satellite network for real-time, radar-like traffic information directed to ADS-B equipped aircraft, then transmitted to the FAA ashore and to air traffic controllers and other aircraft. In addition, the system provides GoM helicopter operators immediate access to updated weather information and flight information services. The system on the ATP Innovator platform will be part of a larger network of systems that are set to go operational in December.
