SINGAPORE -- CAPE Group has developed and tested an orbital welding unit that can be used to repair oil and gas pipelines on the seabed. The company carried out a trial in Abu Dhabi where two sections of 30-in. (76-cm) pipe were successfully welded underwater using a hyperbaric chamber specially designed to house the orbital welding equipment.
CAPE Group is planning further tests on 48-in (122-cm) pipelines to prequalify the repair technique for two major Qatar-based operators.
