ABU DHABI, UAE -- Gulf Technical and Safety Training Centre (GTSC) is launching the Middle East's first fully operational training well at its Mussaffah base in Abu Dhabi.

The $1.5-million investment will see a new 1,700-ft (518-m) well with 7-in. (18-cm) casing drilled and 3-in. (8-cm) completion, complete with a 19-m (62-ft) derrick and a 16-m (52-ft) working platform. A 30-metric-ton (33-ton) hoisting device will enable completion strings to be run in and out the well ensuring the training disseminated is as accurate to real operations as possible.

The well will provide course participants with hands-on experience in drilling, completion, well intervention, and workover situations, enabling organizations to effectively train their staff to the highest standards. The courses meet Integrated Management System (IMS) standards, such as ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004, International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) regulations as well as regional and international safety directives.
