HOUSTON --Schlumberger and BT have introduced a public wireless broadband service for offshore drilling rigs and production platforms.

The service has been operational for three months on theByford Dolphin rig in the North Sea, following installation by Schlumberger Information Solutions. Wireless connectivity is provided via the rig's main satellite link.

The Wi-Fi service allows the rig's 100-plus crew to access the internet via wirelessly enabled laptops, throughout the accommodation area, as they would from any BT Openzone `hotspot' onshore.

Following the results of this trial, Schlumberger plans to offer the service globally for offshore/remote installations.
