Enventure Global Technology and Shell have announced successful completion of major tool testing for their MonoDiameter System, a well construction process that eliminates drillstring tapering. Verifying individual downhole tools in this field application brings the single-diameter well closer to a reality.
Shell and Eventure presented its MonoDiameter field trial appraisal well technical paper at the Offshore Technology Conference on Tuesday, May 3. A. Filippov, M. Akhideno, and D. Zijsling with Shell and K. Waddell, S. Costa, B. Watson, and B. Bell of Enventure Global Technology presented paper OTC 17437, "Continued Evolution of the One-Trip Expansion, Single-Diameter Wellbore."
Advancement of MonoDiameter Technology has been a joint development effort between Enventure and Shell for over four years, with this field appraisal well being the most recent proof-of-design success.
Significant results realized from this field application include validating single-trip expansion concepts and verifying the tool string in a subsurface environment. The application exposed the MonoDiameter System to downhole fluids and pressures and tested tool performance. The single-diameter expansion system expanded the vital "bell section" and the liner and clad back into the base casing.
"The successful results from this appraisal well confirm that Enventure remains on the right track in the development of a true MonoDiameter Liner System," said Robert Hinkel, president and CEO of Enventure.
Another significant result of the appraisal well was proving the viability of expanding against and into the formation. The expansion-against-formation feature creates the seal between the pipe and the formation with no additional sealing component necessary and allows operators to clad over (seal off) desired sections rather than the entire length of openhole. Expanding into the formation maintains the previous wellbore inside diameter and eliminates tapering of the casing.
"The MonoDiameter Liner System comprises technology that will impact the drilling industry significantly," said Hinkel. "Its potential has far-reaching benefits that range from significantly extending drilling reach to creating a smaller environmental footprint."
