Gujarat State Petroleum Corp. discovered natural gas in the KG No. 8 well on block KG-OSN-2001/3 in the Krishna Godavari basin off the east coast of India. The company completed initial testing of perforations from 4,747.5 to 4,777 m at a stabilized flow rate in excess of 10 MMcf/d at a flowing pressure of 4,500 psi. GSPC will continue testing from 4,747.5-4,993 m in the 5 in. casing prior to testing uphole from 4,205-4,700 m in the 7 in. casing.
Testing in the Deen Dayal structure has proven gas at good production rates, according to the company. GSPC says it must complete additional testing and technical evaluation and more drill more exploratory wells to establish the extent of the field and estimate the reserves. Commercial production is planned for 2007.
The KG No. 8 well was drilled to a depth of 5,061 m. This is the deepest well drilled offshore to date in the KG basin, according to GSPC. The well is the third exploration hole drilled in a 14-well drilling program for the block.
According to the company, the Deen Dayal structure may cover a 100 sq km area based on 3D seismic interpretation. Further exploratory drilling will delineate the structure at 4 km stepouts to the east of the KG No. 8 well. GSPC is seeking additional high temperature – high pressure drilling rigs for this work.
GSPC is operator of the block, but GeoGlobal Resources Inc. has a 5% net carried interest in the 14 wells being drilled under the production sharing contract for the block.
